Emily Blitz, PsyD, PMH-C
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PsyD) with a certificate in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) providing psychodynamic and attachment-based treatment. I provide culturally sensitive and LGBTQIA+ affirmative care.
In my private practice, I provide relational, psychodynamic psychotherapy tailored to each individual’s unique story and needs. I work with adults across the lifespan, helping clients make sense of their symptoms and experiences. I create a supportive, consistent, and safe space where clients can explore their emotions, relationships, and personal growth at a steady and consistent pace. Within therapy, clients explore the movements of their inner world, gaining understanding of their emotions and relational patterns. By understanding ourselves, we can cultivate the capacity to relate more authentically to others. As offered by Carl Jung, “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
In addition to psychodynamic therapy, I provide focused, specialized care for expectant and new parents. I have completed specialized training in perinatal mood disorders and advanced perinatal psychotherapy through Postpartum Support International (PSI). These services build on my relational psychodynamic approach to address the unique emotional, relational, and attachment challenges of the perinatal period. As Joan Raphael-Leff, Psychoanalyst & Social Psychologist movingly writes, “On a deep unconscious level, the pregnant woman hovers between internal and external worlds, at a crossroads of past, present and future; self and other.” Let’s understand this intense and tender time – together.
Credentials, Education, & Experience
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in both Illinois and Vermont, as well as a member of PSYPACT. I earned both my doctorate and master’s in clinical psychology from Adler University in Chicago, Illinois. During graduate training, I gained experience in college counseling, community mental health, and private practice settings. I worked extensively with cisgender women and trauma, completing a full-time clinical internship at a transitional housing facility for formerly incarcerated women. After graduate school, I completed a year-long fellowship at the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis, followed by a postdoctoral residency at a group private practice specializing in relational psychotherapy and multiculturalism. More recently, I completed specialized training in perinatal mood disorders and advanced perinatal psychotherapy through Postpartum Support International (PSI).
In addition to my private practice, I have supervised doctoral interns at an APA-accredited community mental health internship that provides comprehensive, trauma-informed care to primarily underserved and high-need neighborhoods. I have also served as an Associate Professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where I taught graduate courses on Organizational Psychology, clinical supervision, and professional practice.
I call Chicago home and I have lived in the Chicago area for over 10 years. Outside of work, I enjoy connecting with family and friends, experimenting with seasonal new recipes (I have an ever-growing collection of cookbooks), diving into a good mystery novel, or spending time outside.
