Emily Blitz, PsyD

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PsyD) providing psychodynamic and relational, attachment-based therapy with an emphasis on trauma-informed care. I provide culturally sensitive and LGBTQIA+ affirmative treatment.

In my private practice, I provide relational, psychodynamic psychotherapy tailored to each unique individual. I work with adults across the lifespan, helping clients make sense of their symptoms and experiences. Rather than asking, “What's wrong?" we learn to ask, "What has your experience taught you to expect?" Through a practice of increasing curiosity and suspending judgement, clients explore the movements of their inner world, gaining understanding of their emotions and relational patterns. Many of my clients bring family of origin dynamics, relationship concerns, and existential questions into our work.

I seek to create a supportive, consistent, and attuned space where clients can explore their emotions, relationships, and personal growth at a steady pace, while also offering thoughtful and direct feedback, as needed.

By understanding our history, we can cultivate the capacity to live more authentically in the present. As Shakespeare observed in The Tempest, "What's past is prologue."

Credentials, Education, & Experience

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in both Illinois and Vermont, as well as a member of PSYPACT. I earned both my doctorate and master’s in clinical psychology from Adler University in Chicago, Illinois. During graduate training, I gained experience in college counseling, community mental health, and private practice settings. I worked extensively with cisgender women and trauma, completing a full-time clinical internship at a transitional housing facility for formerly incarcerated women. After graduate school, I completed a year-long fellowship at the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis, followed by a postdoctoral residency at a group private practice specializing in relational psychotherapy and multiculturalism. More recently, I completed specialized training in perinatal mood disorders and advanced perinatal psychotherapy through Postpartum Support International (PSI). This helped deepen my understanding of the impact of family of origin dynamics on adult psychology.

In addition to my private practice, I have supervised doctoral interns at an APA-accredited community mental health internship that provides comprehensive, trauma-informed care to primarily underserved and high-need neighborhoods. I have also served as an Associate Professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where I taught graduate courses on Organizational Psychology, clinical supervision, and professional practice.

I lived and practiced for over a decade in Chicago, where I completed my graduate training and established my practice. Outside of work, I enjoy connecting with family and friends, experimenting with seasonal new recipes (I have an ever-growing collection of cookbooks), diving into a good mystery novel, or spending time outside.
